Good care extends the working life of surgical and dental instruments. These general practices apply to most stainless steel instruments; always follow the instructions of the instrument maker and your facility’s reprocessing policy.
Clean promptly
Rinse instruments soon after use so blood and tissue do not dry on. Keep them open and separate from other items.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Prolonged soaking in saline or strong chlorine solutions can cause pitting and staining. Use neutral or manufacturer-recommended detergents.
Use ultrasonic cleaning for fine detail
Ultrasonic cleaners reach serrations, box locks and hinges that are difficult to brush clean.
Dry thoroughly and lubricate
Dry instruments completely and apply instrument milk or lubricant to hinges and box locks before sterilising.
Sterilise correctly
Do not overload trays or pouches, and leave ratchets and jaws open during steam sterilisation so steam reaches every surface.
Inspect regularly
Check alignment, sharpness and locking action. Instruments that no longer meet standard should be repaired or replaced.
