Metzenbaum scissors are the surgeon's main instrument for sharp and blunt dissection of soft, delicate tissue. Their long shanks and comparatively short blades place the cutting edges precisely at depth, while keeping the hand clear of the field. They are designed for tissue only and are kept separate from suture-cutting scissors to preserve their edges.
Design features
- Long shanks with short, finely ground blades for precise cutting at depth
- Rounded (blunt/blunt) tips allow spreading for blunt dissection without perforating tissue
- Light, balanced construction for fine control during long procedures
- Curved version follows anatomical planes and keeps the tips visible
- Available from 16 cm for superficial work to 30 cm for deep abdominal and thoracic fields
Typical applications
- Abdominal, thoracic and vascular dissection
- Separating tissue planes and undermining skin flaps
- Gynaecological and urological procedures
- Paediatric and general soft-tissue surgery
Care
Reserve dissecting scissors for tissue only; cutting sutures or dressings dulls the fine edges quickly.
