The Mayo-Hegar is the most widely used needle holder in general surgery. Its short, robust jaws carry a fine cross-hatched serration with a longitudinal groove, which seats curved needles firmly and resists rotation as the needle is driven through tissue. A three-position ratchet locks the needle at the chosen pressure, and the wide range of lengths covers everything from skin closure to deep abdominal and pelvic suturing.
Design features
- Short, strong jaws with cross-hatched serrations and a central groove for needle stability
- Three-position ratchet to set and hold needle grip
- Box joint construction for durable jaw alignment
- Ring handles for controlled pronation and supination while suturing
- Curved-jaw version for suturing in angled or restricted fields
Typical applications
- Skin and fascia closure in general surgery
- Deep abdominal and pelvic suturing (longer sizes)
- Obstetric, gynaecological and orthopaedic suturing
- Medium to heavy suture needles
Care
Use needles suited to the jaw size. Clean the joint and jaw serrations thoroughly and process with the ratchet open. Check that the jaws hold a needle firmly without rocking.
